Crafting an Upcycled Giraffe Marionette A Fun DIY Project

Some time ago we made a SNAKE DOLL on the bike with milk bottle stopper and cardboard, which the children totally enjoyed and have played with for centuries. So I’m starting to think of other dolls that we could make from recycled materials.

My little one loves giraffes, so we thought we’d give it a try. I must admit that the giraffe was a little more difficult to make than the snake!

MATERIAL:

A selection of plastic milk bottle stoppers and larger lids
Thick corrugated cardboard
Wooden beads – 15mm and 8mm
Wire
Google’s eyes
Perforator
Metal skewer

AS:

Start by collecting a selection of plastic bottle caps for your home recycling. We used smaller bottle caps and milk bottle caps for the giraffe’s neck and legs and larger lids for the body. Cut cardboard slices the same size as the milk bottle caps for the neck of the giraffe and larger slices for the body of the giraffe. If you do not have many bottle caps, just add extra cardboard discs.

Make a hole in the center of the cardboard discs with a hole puncher and punch holes in the plastic covers with a hot metal skewer.

Start by looking at the body of the giraffe. Make 2 holes in one of the plastic covers to make the front of the body. Thread through a string and thread the rest of the cardboard lids and discs with large wooden beads between the plastic lids to create space and allow the movement of the giraffe’s body. Add smaller beads to make the tail and fasten with a knot at the end.

Add bottle caps, wooden beads and cardboard discs to make the giraffe’s neck and head. Cut the ears and horns of the giraffe from cardboard and glue them on the head with wide open eyes. Finally, tie a long string to make your puppet by tying it on the upper neck and back of the body.
